Fever Pitch

Fever Pitch posterI watched 2 films the same day on April 10, 2005 (Fever Pitch and The Amityville Horror) with Fever Pitch being the matinee showing at 2:20pm at the Coral Ridge Mall. I'm not a big baseball fan nor do I truly like most comedies nor am I a fan of either Drew Barrymore or Jimmy Fallon. Why I chose to go to a film that met so many non-favorable categories might be wondered, but I generally do try to not let prior prejudices greatly affect my movie experience.

The film is about a woman who meets a guy, the standard fare for many a romantic comedy. The guy is perfect, funny, cute, caring and played by Jimmy Fallon. What the woman, who is played by Drew Barrymore, doesn't know and what we do know is that this guy is obsessed, utterly and completely, with baseball. Not only is he obsessed, but it is just 1 team he is obsessed with watching since a child due to going with his uncle each week during baseball season. This same uncle left him the season tickets in prime seating area for this team--the Boston Red Sox.

There really aren't any very funny scenes in this film, so the comedy is pretty light. The romantic moments are pretty light as well, and the characters are even pretty light. Despite this and despite my not being a fan of so many points of the background of the film, the film itself is actually decent. It might be because I like history and I like the idea of the underdog, and this film does have both a discussion of the history of the Red Sox and the events of 2004 concerning the season and the World Series that year. I might imagine that a fan of baseball wouldn't really love this film, while a fan of comedy might not either, yet somehow I did just a bit and I'm still not entirely sure why.

I am giving the film a decent rating because it is decent. It isn't spectacular and it isn't awful. It is above average, though, and I did enjoy it in a mindless sort of way.

Please feel free to comment on this review or on the movie itself at the forum thread devoted to it at this location.
