Mindhunters

This movie took forever to make it to the theatres due to waiting 2 years for release by Dimension films, then it only ended up playing at Old Capitol Mall's cinema for a couple of weeks before ending its run. I made the last showing on May 29 2005 at 9:40pm.

For comfort, the Old Capitol Mall theatre is the best of the 3 major ones in my area. It is an older cinema with a long single aisle and seating on each side leading up to the screen. The night I watched Mindhunters, I was the theatre's sole occupant, lending an eerie air of tension as I watched the movie.

Mindhunters posterStarting off as a stock movie about a group of aspiring FBI serial killer profiler trainees, the 8 would be agents find out their last training mission will take place on an isolated island called Oneiga Island to track down a make believe killer named The Puppeteer. Unfortunately for them, someone on the island does wants to kill everyone for real, although the killer might be a person already on the island or someone in their own group.

The tension in the film after they are on the island alone builds considerably given my own tension as I sat alone glancing back repeatedly in the dark theatre at the long rows looming behind me. Due to this atmosphere, the movie managed to scare me much more than the horror films I've seen this year or in recent years.

Similar to a lot of thrillers and a lot of recent movies for that matter, the scenes toward the end tend to fall apart logic-wise, especially when we are down to but a few agents and the suspicion transitions from one character to another being the killer, but this really doesn't tarnish the picture too much. I was certainly surprised enough along the way with this whodoneit despite the film itself being based off the main ideas from the well-known Agatha Christie And Then There Were None novel.

I am rating this movie with a good rank. I will definitely get it on DVD as I enjoyed the story and the suspense even if most of the characters weren't so memorable.

Please feel free to comment on this review or on the movie itself at the forum thread devoted to it at this location.
